Preserving the skins
The tanning process involves a number of essential aspects. Since it is not always possible to process the hides in the tannery within 24 to 48 hours, the hides can be preserved before tanning. This can be done in many different ways. First of all, the skin can be cooled: this means that the skin can be kept for a maximum of 3 to 4 weeks on average. This is because the cowhide is of course a natural material. Compare it with your own refrigerator: bacteria are kept away by the cold, so that the contents of your refrigerator can be kept longer. The same case occurs with the hides. Finally, the skin can be salted, which gives the skin a shelf life of about 6 months. This way is the most commonly used method of preservation. Compare this method with a salted herring: the salt keeps it fresh longer, as the salt pulls out all the moisture. Again, this repels bacteria, leaving the skin unaffected for six months.
